Hi all
I am just about to pick up a 1500 se wing,an import from the USA and is an 1988 I believe.
I am a disabled rider and have heard that some of the models had an electrically operated side stand,is this so?? is so what models had it fitted and what is the likely hood of finding one,
Many thanks.

Welcome.
You're probably thinking of Goldwing "landing gear". Not a side stand but two wheels that dropped down at a preset speed. From memory, they were made in the USA but I believe the company is no more.
I think someone over here had a set.
Someone will probably be along soon with better info. _________________ Hey, don't ask me why or how, but I'm getting pm alerts again! |

Thanks Graham, not quite what I was thinking about,I was told there is a side stand that comes down at the press of a button, since posting and doing some more looking it appears there is a centre stand fitted that is driven by an electric motor to lower it down.
I think the twin wheels would take up all the space in the panniers and leave us with not a lotof space for touring.

dont think the landing gear affects panniers at all if you can find it _________________ GL1800 ILLUSION RED 2002

The landing gear comes up at the side of the panniers. As for an electric stand a long tome ago I saw two extending poles that acted as a main stand. Havent seen them on sale for years though.
Many accesories for the 1500 are no longer avaialable. Not suprising really as the 1500 has ben out of production for 14 years.

Just realised, my 1990 1500 qualifies for classic inisurance next year as it will be 25 years old - good quaility insurance for low money _________________ 1990 GL1500 Goldwing in powder (puff) blue

Never say never Al. Your circuimstances can change very quickly and one of these conversions could be the difference of being able to ride - or not.
This system looks like it is better than the landing gear conversion I fited a few years back as the wheels appear to lift up out of the way better.

Yes I agree Dougal, looked at this system after seeing the link, and got a quote from the company yesterday- the Kit is $5995 and it would have to be shipped to UK- weight is two boxes at 50lbs each.
It looks like a good midway between a solo and full triking - and could be transferred from bike to bike if necessary, and would take away the worry of slow speed manouvering if your legs can't hold the bike upright any more.
I'm waiting for a shipping quote now- to see if it is worth doing.
They also do Ghost wheels- a bit like outrigger wheels that can be lifted or kept down, but allow leaning in to corners with the wheels down for stability again. _________________ Are we having fun yet?

Ok guys
Have just got the bike home and it looks like I will be able to operate the side stand reasonably ok,centre stand !!!now there is a different beast I understand the dynamics of foot on stand push down whilst pulling back!!! What a muppet I feel 19stones of living blubber and all I managed to do was break out in a sweat so this is going to need some work.
The side stand seems to be to long as once say on the bike I have to lean it to the right to get it to clear and pop up.
Think what I need is a manual so I can learn how stuff works, radio just crackles and Cassettes WOW not had any of those in a while
Also need to know how to open the side panniers, lots to learn but I think off tp eBay to try and find a workshop manual and do some reading.

I was keeping on topic as you can see but I will pop over to the other forum and see if any one can answer my questions.

Thanks guys going to get a workshop manual and see if I can play with the side stand to make it a bit shorter(unless the suspension needs sorting to raise the rear) and go from there.
That said both of those ideas look ok,think the short centre stand could be done at home with a used stand, the electric side stand might nedd a bit more head scratching, but the favourite at the moment is the leg up landing gear(as long as I don't have to sell the bike to afford it )
So loads to sort out and again thanks for the help.

You might want to check the rear suspension air pressure which is inflatable from the panel on the right side of the fairing.

If you're interested in the Landing Gear, I know of a complete set up for sale not far from me.
PM me if you want details.

As I am still a new owner I will ask the obvious )and hope to get away with it)- can you use the reverse gear on the standard 1500 centre stand and get it to do the same job as the one highlighted by The Green Cornet supplied by Cyclemax? _________________ Are we having fun yet?

Yeah after asking it, I realised that the back wheel comes off the ground- If you don't ask, you don't learn!
thanks

Getting the Wing onto the centre stand is more about technique than pure strength. It took me some time before I got the knack. Make sure your centre stand is free as they tend to get very stiff and also your rear suspension and tyre pressures are right. Here is a couple of clips which may help.

If you take an advanced motorcycle course, e.g. RoSPA, they will show you exactly how to put a bike on and off it's main stand. I know we do in Merseyside RoADAR. There is no effort required to put it on or off, it's all about using the bike to do the work. One thing we do stress is, don't sit on the bike to take it off the main stand, we do it stood at the side of it.
On the same training, I do the demonstration on how to pick a bike up safely and correctly, after you may have dropped it. It always amazes those who haven't seen it, how easy it is. _________________ Adrian
