General Information
A Brief Outline of the history of the GoldWing Owners Club of
Great Britain
The first GL 1000K1 GoldWing Motorcycle was introduced to Great
Britain in October 1975 at a price of £1,605.00p.
One
by one, enthusiasts purchased these machines from the Honda outlets,
but it wasn't until the early part of 1980 following a small advertisement
in a weekly motorcycle magazine, 24 GoldWing owners met in the little
town of Aalter in Belgium over the Easter holiday. The invitation
was to a Treffen - German for "Gathering of Friends".
One of those present from Great Britain was the late Harry Ward,
former Honorary life President of the GWOCGB. So impressed was he,
by the obvious international camaraderie of owners of these machines,
he resolved to set in motion the embryo GoldWing Owners Club of
Great Britain. With the assistance of the then secretary of the
GoldWing Owners Club of Belgium, Rudi Geryl, the inaugural meeting
of GWOCGB was held at the Tower House Hotel, Reading, on 17th May
1980. 37 GoldWing Owners attended.
From these small beginnings the British Club now boasts 37 regions
throughout Britain and has the largest membership amongst the 18
nations of the GoldWing
European Federation.
The Federation came into being in 1983 as a natural extension of
the individual national clubs aims to promote friendship among GoldWing
owners at an International level and understanding between people
of different nations, as well as promoting the virtues of the worlds
finest touring motorcycle to members of the public.
In total, European GoldWingers number in excess of 10,000 - 2000
of whom live in Great Britain. The British Club run an extensive
program of Wing Dings between March and
October and are always well represented at many of the International
Treffens in Europe throughout the year.
